Darlene Disney Named San Diego Crew Classic Executive Director
2014 Regatta Set for April 5-6 on Crown Point Shores on Mission Bay
San Diego, CA– (October 18, 2013)-The San Diego Crew Classic, the premier spring regatta is pleased to announce Darlene Disney has been appointed Executive Director.
Disney brings many local connections to the event having grown up in San Diego County. Disney is a graduate of SDSU along with holding a Masters Degree from the University of Pennsylvania. She also brings over 20 years of professional executive-level non-profit experience to the organization and has a long association with event as a competitor, coach and a fan.
The San Diego Crew Classic includes over 4,400 athletes from more than 125 universities, clubs and high schools from across the United States, as well as the world. Athletes, range in age from 14 to 84 years, compete in more than 100 races in various divisions.
“I’m very excited to be part of this amazing rowing event that has such a huge local, national and international reputation,” said Disney, who rowed for SDSU and Vesper Boat Club. She also coached San Diego State women’s crew from 1985-89 and USD women’s rowing from 1989-91 “This is a terrific opportunity and I look forward to working with the many dynamic coaches, athletes and our Board of Directors. This event continues to grow in stature each year and I’m so happy to be part of this great event.”
In addition, Disney participated in the Olympic Trials in 1980 and 1984 as well as being a National Rowing Champion in 1979, 1980, 1981, 1983 and 1984.
“Darlene brings great enthusiasm and a vast background in rowing. She has tremendous local connections along with strong links throughout the rowing community,” said Sean Jenkins, San Diego Crew Classic President. “Her knowledge of the San Diego Crew Classic is enormous and she’ll quickly get up to speed for our 41st regatta.”
Disney replaces Martha Shumaker who will be on-board to assist with this year’s event. Shumaker will be retiring after 2014 Executive Director having been involved in the San Diego Crew Classic since its inception in 1973.
From its modest beginnings in 1973, the Crew Classic has matured into one of the largest regattas held primarily for eight-oared rowing shells. Today, it is a two-day, nationally acclaimed regatta for juniors, collegiate, masters and even Olympic-level competitors, set in the picturesque waters, sandy shores and green lawns of Mission Bay Park in San Diego, California.
More than 25,000 spectators will watch the races both from the shoreline, as well as on the popular Jumbotron on-site. San Diegans can be proud of the strong influence the regatta has had on the sport. With the explosive power of eight athletes, races start near the Sea World towers and pass the Ingraham Street Bridge, head North along Mission Bay for 2000 meters, and finish at Crown Point Shores — all while being cheered on by fans, families, coaches and college pep bands.
